The Norfolk Chamber of Commerce’s GDPR Conference was one of the most popular in its history, a visible indicator of how close we are to these new regulations coming into effect and the proactive outlook of many of our region’s businesses that are looking to ensure their data processes are properly prepared for the changes ahead.
Our Managing Director, John Gostling, joined a panel of speakers including Alex Saunders from Leathes Prior, Tom Parsley from Selesti and Darren Chapman from CyberScale.
With over 300 attendees from local businesses and organisations present, the GDPR Conference was the ideal platform to share GDPR knowledge across different specialisms – from the legal perspective, through to implications on marketing, technology and cyber security.
This coming together of speakers from different industries highlights the fact that the GDPR is not something you can tackle in isolation. Not only will its presence make itself known across various areas of business, it will also impact employees throughout an organisation.
As part of his talk, John focused on how to protect your organisation from data breaches – let’s not forget that as part of the GDPR you have 72 hours to report a breach that impacts on rights and freedom.
A personal data breach means a breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, personal data. This includes breaches that are the result of both accidental and deliberate causes.
Human error is the biggest contributing factor to a data breach – by providing training and sharing knowledge of the GDPR you are taking an initial preventative step in stopping future breaches.
Preparation for the GDPR has to be an ongoing process, the 25 May is not far away now – but systems and procedures need to keep evolving past this data for your organisation to continue to meet the GDPR standards.
