Microsoft Whiteboard

Each month Microsoft roll out updates to its suite of software including Teams, SharePoint, Yammer and more. You could look through all the updates on the Microsoft roadmap. But to make it easier, we’ve put together the top ones to look out for this October.

This new feature gives you the capability to temporarily unmute by press “Ctrl Spacebar” to speak.

New Video Filters
Before joining a meeting, you can use filters to subtly adjust lighting levels and smooth out facial features to customise your appearance.

New Polling App “Polls” in Teams Meeting and Chat
Forms are releasing a more discoverable app named “Polls” in Teams. Adding polls to your Teams chats/meetings via this new “Polls” app will be the same experience as before (via the Forms app), but now it’s under a new app name and Teams-branded icon.

Data Reports for Polls After Teams Meeting
If you have used a Forms poll in a Teams meeting, a summary report for all the polls used in the meeting will be generated and shared with the meeting organiser and presenters.

RTMP Streaming Support
Enables support for your users to stream their Teams meetings to large audiences through Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP). This includes endpoints outside your organisation.

Users to Purchase Teams Apps Through the Teams Store
Microsoft Teams users will have the ability to purchase third-party Teams app subscriptions from the Teams store.

Queue View for Virtual Visits Scheduled in the Microsoft Bookings App
Real-time updates to meeting state in a queue view for virtual visits scheduled in the Microsoft Bookings app.

Top Hits in Search Autosuggest
Top Hits is a new section at the top of the autosuggest results in Search where users will see the most relevant results across people, chats, files and more. As a result, this feature will improve discovery and reduce search times.

Upvote Answers to Yammer Questions
This feature will allow you to upvote answers on question posts that you find useful. It will be available for questions both in communities and live events.

Restrict Yammer Community Posting
Gives network managers the ability to restrict who can start a thread in a community. Once this setting is enabled, only admins will have the ability to post in the community while members can only reply and react to conversations.

External Access in Teams Meetings
Any guests, external or anonymous users in a Teams meeting can view and collaborate on the whiteboard during the meeting. However, they will not have continued access to the whiteboard after the meeting ends. This feature only applies to customers using Whiteboard on OneDrive for Business.

Whiteboard on Windows Revamped
Microsoft Whiteboard provides a freeform intelligent canvas where teams can ideate, create, and collaborate visually via the cloud. The new Whiteboard app for Windows addresses key customer asks around offering a uniform & seamless experience with Whiteboard on other platforms. It also provides highly requested features such as the ability to add shapes. As well as adopting a user-centric approach by focusing on marquee features such as ability to insert templates, images, sticky notes, text boxes and stickers. Above all, it will be keeping the interface lean and the user experience simple yet effective.

Updated Tag Column for Images
Image tags are automatically created and include descriptive labels when they are uploaded into SharePoint within Microsoft 365. As a result, this improves Microsoft Search results. With the new update, you will be able to manually add or remove tags from this column using freeform text. Additionally, Microsoft is designing a new flow trigger in Power Automate that will allow programmable actions based on these tags.

Display Images from Microsoft Lists in Power Apps
Power Apps image controls will display images that are stored in Microsoft Lists Image columns. They can be displayed in four sizes: small, medium, large, or full.

Document Library ‘View in File Explorer’ Support in Microsoft Edge
With this change, you can enable the View in File Explorer capability on SharePoint Online. For this experience to be visible and work for your users, you will need to enable a Microsoft Edge policy “Configure the View in File Explorer feature for SharePoint pages in Microsoft Edge” and update your SharePoint Online tenant configuration.

SharePoint and Teams

Rich Previews for Pages and News Articles
When users paste links to SharePoint news posts and modern pages in Teams chat/channels, those links will convert into rich cards displaying the page title, image, author and published date.

Starting in Microsoft Edge version 95, the PDF viewing and markup experience will be improved with the addition of freeform highlighters. This will allow you to highlight sections on PDFs that you may not have access to comment on as well as scanned documents.

For this experience to be visible and work for your users, you will need to enable the Microsoft Edge policy “Configure the View in File Explorer feature for SharePoint pages in Microsoft Edge” and update your SharePoint Online tenant configuration.

Word on the Web

Simple Markup View in Word for the Web
Simple Markup view keeps suggestions from others—both tracked changes and comments—on the periphery. This will allow you to focus on the document itself while remaining aware that there are suggestions present.

Outlook – Mobile

Time Sensitive Emails in Play My Emails (PME)
Play My Emails in Outlook mobile will now identify potential time-sensitive and important emails to you and read them before the rest of your inbox.

To note: whilst these features are expected to be released in October, the process of rolling them out to all users can take time. Occasionally features can be delayed.
